The West is comprised of mountain states - Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming - and Pacific states - Alaska, California, Hawaii, Oregon, and Washington State. The land mass west of the Mississippi River more than doubles the land to the east of the Mississippi. In fact, Alaska itself measures one-fifth the size of the continental United States.
