An archipelago of eight main islands (Hawaiʻi (aka The Big Island), Maui, Oʻahu, Kahoʻolawe, Lanaʻi, Molokaʻi, Kauaʻi and Niʻihau) and many smaller isles, Hawaii is known for its beautiful beaches, year-round mild climate, and volcanoes. Two natural sites - Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument - are included on the list of U.S. UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Hawaii is the USA's 50th State, having joined the union on August 21, 1959.
