As more travelers look to social media for information on destinations, more tourism boards are paying attention to their presence on social sites like Facebook and Twitter. Travel news upstart Skift recently took a look at the most popular U.S. cities on Twitter and some of the results will surprise you.
Using their just-launched Skift Social tool, Skift looked at which U.S. city tourism boards have been the most active on Twitter, meaning how many tweets they've posted, new followers they've gained, re-tweets they've earned, etc. Seven of the top 10 cities are the usual suspects: San Francisco, New York City, Las Vegas, Miami, and so on. But three cities - Portland, Oregon; Columbia, South Carolina; and Louisville, Kentucky - came in at numbers 7, 9, and 10, respectively.
Here's the line-up of the top 10 tourism board tweeters:

Visit Skift to see more about the data and how the tourism boards are interacting with travelers. Note that you can expect this data to change as more cities get into or enhance their understanding of the social game.
