A new exhibit at the Smithsonian American Art Museum is a fascinating look at some of the most profound art produced in this country in the mid-19th century. The Civil War and American Art features 57 paintings by Winslow Homer, Albert Bierstadt, Frederic Edwin Church, Sanford Robinson Gifford, and a few other contemporaries. There are also 18 vintage photographs on display, several of which were taken at Antietam and Gettysburg within days of those battles.

The Civil War and American Art is one of my picks for must-see museum exhibits in 2013. The show will run through April 28, 2013, in Washington, DC, at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Then, it will travel to New York City, where the Metropolitan Museum of Art will display the works from May 21 through September 2, 2013.
