Here's a round-up of the latest USA travel news and stories that caught my eye:

  • Writing for the New York Times in this fascinating feature, Guy Trebay takes us on a journey to Virginia's Northern Neck, an area steeped in history (it includes Washington's birthplace) but largely forgotten as a tourist destination. [NYT]
  • Star chef Mario Batali has announced plans to open a new pizzeria in Boston. [Eater]
  • You know that winter is coming when you start seeing articles about dog-sledding adventures. This experience, profiled in The Washington Post, takes place in Mahoosuc, Maine, and looks to be a winter adventure that even less intrepid travelers could love. [The Washington Post]
  • Hurricane Sandy is but a memory to much of the world now, but a Thanksgiving trip up to Long Island made me realize that the wounds this storm opened are still very present. Escape from the Jersey Shore, written by Jennifer Pinkowski in Outside Magazine, is a first-hand account of what survivors (in this case, Ms. Pinkowski's parents and brother) are going through after the storm. [Outside]
  • The L.A. Times had a nice spread on Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley, with details on shopping, dining, and the Cabazon Dinosaurs, among other activities and attractions. [L.A. Times]
  • Hotels in Super Bowl cities always jack up their prices. But a recent survey claims that hotels in New Orleans, which will host the 2013 Super Bowl, are raising rates by 304%. [Skift]
  • Posting on Nat Geo's Intelligent Travel Blog, Christopher Elliott explains that Maui can be as great for kids as it is for honeymooners. [Intelligent Travel]
  • Stuck in the Northeast but keen to ski in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, this winter? United has your back. The airline just announced nonstop service to Jackson Hole from Newark December 19, 2012, through January 2, 2013, and Saturdays from February 9 to March 30, 2013. [NYT In Transit Blog]
